Daman’s Excise officials led by Assistant excise commissioner Milan Kumar Patel, excise inspector Dixit Charania, excise guards—Sunil Dodhiya, Yagnesh Patel, Amit Rajbhar and Manish Yadav—were keeping a watch following a tip-off on the major liquor smuggling from Kedaiya bank in Daman to Gujarat on November 13.
During the night hours, the Excise officials searched five boats parked in the waters at Kediya bank but found nothing. However, the officials found a boat parked in the shallow water, some couple of kilometers away from the bank. Since the excise officials were unable to take their boats in the shallow waters, one of the officers plunged into the sea and swam toward the boat.
On seeing the officer coming towards the boat, the three bootleggers onboard the vessel dived into the sea and escaped in the Gujarat border at Kolak.
The Excise officials have seized more than 8,000 liquor bottles bound to Surat in Gujarat worth lakhs of rupees.
A case was registered by the excise department under the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Excise Act 1964 and Duty Rules 2020 against the unidentified bootleggers. The boat has been seized by the officials for further investigation.
