Two brothers battle each other in Gujarat polls

It’s all in the family during the Gujarat Assembly polls. Two brothers have been pitted against each other in Bharuch’s Ankleshwar-Hansot assembly constituency where the electorate has to make do with this “peculiar situation”.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has repeated Ishwarsinh Thakurbhai Patel and against him is his blood brother Vijaysinh alias Vallabh Thakurbhai Patel who is the Congress candidate. Vijay Singh Patel dissented from the BJP a few months ago following personal differences with his brother Ishwarsinh Patel, who is the former Gujarat Minister for Cooperation and chairman of the Pandvai Sugar Factory.

Gujarat elections have largely been a two-party contest but the Aam Aadmi Party, encouraged by the massive win in the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, is leading an aggressive campaign to make the fight three-cornered.

Vijay Singh Patel immediately joined the Congress after leaving BJP a few months ago. Vijaysinh filed his nomination for the Ankleshar-Hansot seat as the Congress candidate.

Political experts feel that the brothers don’t want to lose a chance to keep the Ankleshwar-Hansot seat in their kitty. While many are claiming that both brothers are not on talking terms, it remains to be seen how much damage is done to either the Congress or BJP.

Ankleshwar-Hansot assembly constituency has been the stronghold for the Patel brothers. Their father, Thakur Gumaan Patel used to contest the Assembly election from Ankleshwar and his brother Ratanji was the BJP MLA.
