Surat: It’s raining cash for the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) in Surat this Diwali. Before the Diwali season, an estimated 1,800 State Transport buses have already been booked from Surat to various destinations in Saurashtra and North Gujarat.

Thanks to the people connected with Surat’s diamond industry, the GSRTC’s coffers are brimming with the heavy rush of passengers traveling from Surat to Saurashtra and North Gujarat during the Diwali festival.

An estimated 10 lakh people from Surat’s diamond district are expected to travel to their hometowns in Saurashtra and North Gujarat with the start of the Diwali vacation. Since the travel fares in the private luxury buses are skyrocketing, the majority of the passengers are preferring to travel in the State Transport buses. For this, the GSRTC has started bookings on attractive base fares to lure travelers.

Damji Mavani, secretary of the Surat Diamond Association (SDA) said, “This time around the number of people traveling to their hometowns in Saurashtra and North Gujarat is going to increase manifold. By next week, people will hit the roads to their hometowns before the Diwali festival and are expected to return on November 15. We are satisfied that the GSRTC has made robust arrangements and is also giving attractive discounts to the passengers”

Sanjay Joshi, the divisional officer of GSRTC in Surat said, “Till now we have booked 1,100 buses and the number of buses is likely to increase to more than 1,800. There is a heavy rush of passengers during the Diwali vacation. We are doing special arrangements for the passengers”
