Surat : A woman police constable was killed and three others were injured in a hit-and-run incident at Bhestan traffic junction on late Wednesday night.
Sources in the police said the woman police constable Lina Kharade, 37 and two other constables—Jayshree Bhoya and Govind Bhawan—were posted at the Bhestan traffic junction. They (constables) stopped an auto driver and were checking the papers of the vehicles.
In the meanwhile, a speeding transport truck hit the auto rickshaw from the rear side on the traffic junction. In the ensuing melee, Lina Kharade, 37, died on the spot, while the auto driver and two police constables received serious injuries.
The driver of the transport truck escaped with his vehicle from the spot immediately after running over the auto rickshaw.
Senior police officers from the City police rushed to the spot after they received information about the gruesome incident at Bhestan.
Husband of the deceased woman police constable, Jayesh Mori said his wife has left behind two children. They were married 13 years ago. She had left the home for the night duty on Wednesday evening.
The Pandesara police has started investigation into the hit-and-run case. The driver of the transport truck is at large.
