Surat (Gujarat) [India]: The Congress leadership has blamed the Narendra Modi-led government in the Centre for the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities and a stiff rise in unemployment among the youths due to wrong economic policies.

In an official communiqué, the Congress party said that PM Modi has not just failed to control price rise since coming to power in 2014, but his misguided policies and deceitfulness have exacerbated the suffering of people. Since 2014, the price of diesel has increased by 75 per cent, petrol witnessed a 40 per cent hike, LPG increased by 156 per cent, mustard oil by 122 per cent, wheat flour by 81 per cent and milk increased to 71 per cent.

In 2019, PM Modi stated how essential items like food grains, curd, lassi and buttermilk were out of the GST net. However, in 2022, the government imposed GST on these items. PM Modi won the election propagating the Ujjwala Yojana, but he soon eliminated cooking gas subsidies after coming into power.

Congress has stated that the international prices of Crude oil and LPG have decreased in the last few months, but the benefit has not been passed on to the consumers in India. Still, the prices of diesel, petrol and LPG are skyrocketing in India.

Unemployment is ever-increasing in India. About 42 per cent of the youth in the age group of 20-43 years are still unemployed, and PhD degree holders and postgraduates are forced to apply for positions much lower than their qualifications, such as peon and others.

Congress stated about seven nationwide protests and mass awakening programmes have been held since June 2021. The party will be holding a ‘Mehangai Par Halla Bol’ rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on September 4.
